Visa

Travelers from most countries (see list below) can enter Thailand as a tourist for up to thirty days without having to apply for a visa.

The process is easy- when you arrive in Thailand you fill out a short form and your Visa is stamped for a 30 day stay, there are no fees to pay.

To qualify for a 30 day tourist visa exemption you must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months, a round-trip air ticket, and you must possess means of living while in country of B10 000 per person or B20 000 Baht per family. 10 000 Baht is about US$315. The reality is you will rarely be asked to show your ticket home, or proof of living expenses. Some people have simply told immigration that they are leaving by land and therefore don’t have a plane ticket home, and been let in without any further problems. However it’s a good idea to have a printout of your plane ticket, some cash, atm printout or traveler’s cheques ready just in case you are asked.

The immigration form will ask for the name, address and telephone of the hotel you are staying in when you arrive in Thailand- make sure you have these details hand you arrive- any guesthouse located in the town of your destination will do, it doesn’t seem to matter if you end up staying there or not.

If you have entered Thailand under the Tourist Visa Exemption category, you can leave and re-enter Thailand a number of times, as long as your stay in
Thailand does not exceed 90 days in total within any 6 month period.

If you wish to stay in Thailand longer than 30 days, the easiest way is to travel to a neighboring country and you will be given a new 30 day stay on your
return.

If you are sure you want to stay longer than thirty days and you don’t want to do a border run, then you should apply for a sixty day tourist visa from the
Thai embassy before you arrive in the country. A sixty day Thailand Visa costs about 1000 Baht.

Thirty day visas can be extended for 10 days, and 6o day visas can be extended for 30 days. There is a fee for visa extensions which can be processed in any
any major city.

It is wise to avoid overstaying your visa in Thailand. If you have overstayed your visa you will pay a fine before you leave- one day over is usually free,
2 days is B400 and B200 per day after that. However, if you have any trouble with the police or immigration while your visa has expired, they may take you
court, imprison, and or deport you.
